Used worldwide throughout the water industry, the GazCal operates in a variety of applications including the printing, plastics manufacture and leisure industries. The equipment is specifically designed to produce a low concentration of Chlorine (CL2) gas for use in the testing and calibration of gas detectors, mainly in safety systems, without having to use bottled gas.

The unit can also be used for cross calibration purposes, Chlorine Dioxide, Ozone and Fluorine equipment depending upon the sensor manufacturer’s recommendations.

Advantages

There are a number of application for the GazCal and these include:-

  • The GazCal Chlorine Generator comes with a choice of 2 flow rates, pre-set at manufacture of 0.5 lpm and 1.0 lpm enabling low level calibration.
  • The equipment is available in 3 ranges: 0-5ppm, 0-10ppm and 0-20ppm. This flexibility allows the user to produce 0.5 – 20.0ppm using just one machine, adjustable in 0.1ppm steps.
  • The GazCal does not have shelf life issues. When switched off, the chlorine cell does not degrade so life expectancy of the cell and equipment is purely based on usage. This makes it cost effective to run. When the unit is switched off, the gas cell is off. With regular calibration and servicing a GazCal can work perfectly well for up to 10 years without a cell change. It has a recommended calibration period of 12 months and you simply return to GCS when your unit needs re-calibrating or maintenance.
  • At 0.5 lpm a GazCal generator cell has lifetime of 500ppm hours which, as an example, equates to 100 hours of constant use at a 5ppm concentration level; enough for at least 400 individual calibrations. The cell life indicator shows the effective life of the generating cell. Once the effective life of the cell is over, a new generating cell can be installed.
  • In comparison with bottled gas, the GazCal is really cost effective. This is because over time the unit, which can generate a variety of gas concentrations, means that with just one piece of equipment the user can perform various calibrations instead of having to use multiple cylinders.
  • The GazCal is certified to produce Chlorine gas mixtures within +/-10% nominal value. Chlorine Gas mixtures in cylinders are certified to a tolerance of +/-5% at concentration levels of 5ppm and above with a small differential when calibrating a fixed Chlorine detection system at alarm points of around 2ppm and 5ppm. The GazCal also produces a stable 2ppm concentration with+/-0.25ppm accuracy. Compact and rugged construction makes the GazCal suitable for the most aggressive environments as well as for test and calibration on-site and in the laboratory. Supplied as a battery operated unit it comes with its own charger. This means the GazCal can be used for production for long periods of time.
  • Easy to transport and carry, the unit is ideal for on-site engineers and is simple to operate with calibration gas available just a few minutes after the unit is switched on.
  • The gas generator is available in 0.5 and 1.0 litre per minute flow rate options. Pre-calibration options enable the user to specify calibration of the unit to suit their application: Low range at 1ppm & 3ppm; Mid range at 5ppm & 10ppm or Full range at 10ppm & 20ppm.
  • The gas generator may be used for calibration of chlorine measuring equipment and for the cross-calibration of Chlorine Dioxide ClO2, Phosgene COCl2, Hydrogen Fluoride HF, Ozone O3 and Fluorine F2 equipment. Please refer to the individual sensor manufacturers who will specify cross sensitivity in their manuals.

Gas Cylinders Disadvantage

  • Traditional gas cylinders of Chlorine are hard to keep stable within gas cylinders below 5ppm concentration.
  • Gas cylinders are provided with single concentrations so for multiple calibration points, a number of cylinders are required.
  • Gas cylinders have a shelf life which means that regular replacement is required whether or not the cylinder has been fully used.
  • There are hazards when transporting traditional gas cylinders as they may be heavy with associated risks.
  • Stainless Steel regulators are expensive to buy and, unless used carefully with post use purging, are liable to corrosion by the chlorine leading to inaccuracies.
